One killed, 5 hurt as robbers open fire

A villager was killed as an armed gang opened fire while committing robbery at the house of a retired army personnel at Rafiqpur village under Rasulpul in Begumganj upazila early yesterday. Five others were seriously injured in the incident. The injured have been admitted to Noakhali General Hospital. The robbers looted Tk 1.5 lakh, five tolas of gold ornaments, two mobile sets and expensive valuable clothes. Begumganj police station OC Abdur Rauf and locals said, a gang of 15 to 20 robbers broke open the door of the house of Mokhlesur Rahman and took the members of the house hostage at gun point. Hearing hue and cry, neighbours rushed to the spot. At this the robbers decamped firing indiscriminately at the villagers. Bullet hit Abdul Jalil, 35, died on the spot, while house owner Mokhlesur Rahman, 65, Hanif, 32, Mamun, 22, and Monir Hossain, 22 received serious injury. UNB from Savar reports: Robbers looted valuables from house of an expatriate at Nikrail village early Wednesday. Locals said, a gang of armed robbers numbering 30-35 entered the house of expatriate Abbas Uddin at night breaking open the main gate. They looted valuables, including, Tk 50,000 and three mobile phone sets, taking the house members hostage at gunpoint. The robbers also beat up four people of the house, leaving them injured as they tried to resist them. Later, the robbers decamped with the booties. Abbas Uddin, who recently came home from Italy, said a gang of robbers earlier looted valuables worth Tk 40 lakh from his house on February 19.
