Sec 144 at Satkhira, 41 Jamaat men rounded up

Police in an overnight drive arrested 41 Jamaat leaders and activists and imposed in the Section 144 yesterday morning around Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park in the town apprehending chaos and clashes there. The district administration imposed the restrictions till 10 pm as Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Muktijoddha Sangsad and Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee called rallies at the same venue at the same time. Central committee of Jamaat-e-Islami, through a press yesterday said the party postponed its rally as Khulna police barred Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed from coming to Satkhira. Mojaheed was due to address the rally at about 3:00pm. The Jamaat leader was barred at Khulna Zero Point at about 1:20am when he was going to Satkhira from Dhaka, reports our staff correspondent in Khulna. Locals said a tense situation prevailed as Jamaat called a public meeting at Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park where Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee and Muktijoddha Sangsad also called a meeting at the same time. Jamaat called a press briefing at 11 am yesterday protesting the Khulna incident but police foiled the programme. Earlier, police arrested 41 Jamaat leaders and activists on Wednesday night from separate places of Satkhira district on charge of holding clandestine meeting and planning acts of sabotage. Police have been deployed at different points of the district town to avert any untoward incident.
