Teachers stage class boycott as BCL locks VC's residence
Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) unit of BCL yesterday locked the vice-chancellor's office-cum-residence on the campus on Wednesday night prompting teachers yesterday to announce boycott of classes from tomorrow.
The university reopened on Sunday after 46 days of closure. Classes and administrative works could not be held until Wednesday due to agitation by BCL backed students and protest programme by employees, officers and teachers of the university.
As the university resumed academic and administrative activities on Wednesday and the authorities fixed Thursday for internship board final examination, VC Dr Nitish Chandra Devnath went to Dhaka on the day to attend a conference and inform the government high-up about the latest university situation.
In absence of the VC, the BCL men locked the evening office-cum-residence of the VC at around 10:30pm.
It prompted the teachers association to hold an urgent meeting yesterday morning.
The meeting strongly condemned and protested the incident. They demanded immediate inquiry into the act and punishment to the culprits.
They also announced boycott of classes as a token protest tomorrow.
They threatened to for an indefinite boycott of classes from Sunday if the law enforcers fail to break open the lock by today.
However, the meeting presided over by Prof Goutam Buddha Das decided to keep the scheduled final examinations out of the purview of the boycott programme.
CVASU Officers Association also at a meeting expressed strong condemnation and concern over putting the VC office-cum-residence under lock and key.
The association leaders also submitted a memorandum to the VC demanding punishment to those involved in manhandling their colleague, said convener Dr Sultan Mahmud.
Earlier, the teachers' and officers' associations and employees union observed work abstention on Monday and Tuesday last protesting alleged manhandling of teachers, officers and staff of the university by the agitating students.
During the work abstention on Tuesday the teachers association also gave a three-day ultimatum to the university authority to punish the students involved in the incident.
Contacted, BCL CVASU convener Kamol Kanti Majumder admitted that they locked the VC office-cum-residence.
“Our agitation will continue until the VC resigns or removed. We are going to declare him persona non-grata soon. We request him not to return to his office or residence on the campus,” he said.
