Boro on 3,000 acres goes under flood water in Moulvibazar

Boro crop on 3,000 acres of land in Kulaura, Baralekha and Juri upazilas of Moulvibazar district has been inundated due to rise in water level in the river Kushiyara and Hakaluki haor (water body). Sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the water level in the Kushiyara and Hakaluki haor has marked a sharp rise due to onrush of water from hills across the border. They said the flash flood may damage 30 to 40 percent of growing boro crop in the areas around Hakaluki haor. Siraj Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Bhukshimul Union Parishad under Kulaura upazila told this correspondent that about 70 percent of boro cropland in his union has been flooded. The UP chairman said he has never seen such situation in Bangla month of Chaitra during the last ten years. Baralekha DAE office source said about 1,000 acres of boro cropland in Sujangar, Borni and Talimpur unions under the upazila have gone under water. Our staff correspondent from Sylhet reports: Ruling party lawmaker Matiur Rahman Wednesday held Water development Board (WDB) officials and contractors responsible for damage to Irri-boro crops in the low-lying areas of Sunamganj district as they did not take timely steps to repair of the damaged flood protection embankments. Addressing a press conference at Sunamganj Press club, the lawmaker, also the acting president of the district Awami League, alleged that WDB officials and contractors made delay in repairing the flood protection embankments. Thousands of farmers in different upazilas of the district have to incur heavy loss due to callousness of the contractors and WDB officials, the lawmaker, said adding that actions will be taken against the persons responsible. Sunamganj Chamber President Khairul Huda Chapal, Sadar upazila AL President Haji Abul Kalam were present at the conference. Meanwhile, people of Sunamganj living in the divisional headquarters formed a human chain on Wednesday demanding immediate steps to repair of the damaged flood protection embankments to save the rest of Irri-boro crops in haors areas. They also demanded actions against the WDB officials and contractors who did not take timely steps to protect crops from flood. Activists of Sunamganj Chhatra Kalyan Parishad, Jagannathpur Chhatra Jubo Kalyan Parishad and Madhyanagar Chhatra Kalyan parishad joined the programme at court point in the city.
