70 food poisoned in Rangpur
At least 70 poor people fell sick after taking leftover from the food served at a wedding party at Ganeshpur in the town on Wednesday night.
Of them, two are now undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital, 21 at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH), while the rest were released from RMCH yesterday.
Those undergoing treatment at RMCH are Akhi, 18, Ashiqur, 17, Shila, 12, Pial, 8, Rafia, 10, Oli, 34, Sagar, 10, Akbar, 11, Asma, 40, Jewel, 35, Monwara, 27, Opel, 2, Mousomi, 24, Minati, 13, Sarmin, 2, Raku, 9, Sanu, 12, Mozammel, 40, Safi, 40, Selim, 8, Nurul Islam, 48 and Rahima Begum, 34.
Mokbul Hossain of Ganeshpur area arranged the party at a community centre in the town on his daughter's wedding. After the party, leftovers were distributed among the poor. Immediately after taking food, they started vomiting and also complained of abdominal pain. Locals rushed them (poor people) to the hospitals.
It might be an incident of food poisoning, said Director of Rangpur Medical College Hospital Anisul Karim. Sazzad Haider, registrar of RMCH child ward, confirmed that the children fell sick after taking poisoned food.
Mokbul Hossain, host of the wedding party, declined to comment on the incident.
