Academic activities at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU) resume on Sunday around three and a half months after university was closed sine die on December 14 last year. The CVASU authorities in an emergency syndicate meeting on Wednesday evening also decided to re-open the two residential halls tomorrow. Vice-Chancellor Principal Nitish Chandra Devnath chaired the meeting. In the meeting the authorities directed the students, who have been occupying the halls defying the university orders to vacate the dormitories within 24 hours of the notice issued on Wednesday evening. The authorities closed the university and asked the students to vacate the two residential halls on December 14 last year as some students under the banner of General Students Forum and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) enforced an indefinite strike. The strike was enforced demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Dr Nitish Chandra Debnath on charge of corruption and nepotism in recruitment of staff. Despite closure, some 50 students loyal to BCL had been staying at male dormitories till date defying the CVASU orders said the sources. After Wednesday's syndicate order the students occupying the halls held a rally under the banner of CVASU BCL and General Student Forum in front of the main gate of the university yesterday afternoon. At the rally presided by Forum convener Kamol Kanti Majumder, they vowed to stay at the halls and threatened to put the office of the VC under lock and key. Talking to this correspondent Kamol said, “We will open the university on Saturday, not Sunday. But all the activities of the VC office would remain suspended.” “We have requested all the teachers not to cooperate with VC Nitish Chandra Devnath,” he said. Asked how being students they would open the university or keep activities of VC office suspended, Kamol said, “The university would re-open on Saturday following an announcement by BCL and General Student Forum." “We will lay a siege to the VC office and continue agitation until resignation of the VC,” added. Contacted, VC Dr Nitish Chandra Debnath said, “The university will re-open as per the decision of the syndicate meeting. If they continue to occupy the hall violating order of the authorities or try to hamper classes or administrative activities, legal steps would be taken against them.” Regarding the alleged corruption and nepotism in recruitment process, the VC said, “I never indulged in any corruption or nepotism and nothing would be found in case of any investigation in this regard."
