15 hurt as rival BNP men clash in Kushtia

At least 15 people, including a policeman, were injured during a clash between two factions of BNP district unit yesterday. Kushtia BNP is divided into two factions. One is led by Minhazur Rahman Alo and Nurul Islam Ansar while the other by Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi and Sohrab Uddin. The trouble began at around 1:30pm when Alo-Ansar group took out a procession in the town on the occasion of a meeting of the party's grassroots leaders and activists of Kushtia, Meherpur and Chuadanga districts scheduled to be held in Kushtia today. Standing Committee member Dr Moyeen Khan, Krishak Dal President Sahamsuzzamn Dudu, and former state minister Ukil Abdul Sattar are expected to attend the meeting. When the procession reached near the district BNP office at Nawab Sirajuddowla Road, activists belonging to Mehedi-Sohrab faction came out of the party office and attacked their rival party men. The feuding groups used sticks, iron rods and other lethal weapons during the clash that continued for half an hour, leaving at least 15 activists from both sides injured. As police rushed to the spot, BNP activists of Mehedi-Soharb group swooped on them, injuring a constable named Ashraful Islam of Kushtia Sadar Police Station. The law enforcers then charged baton on the clashing groups and dispersed them. Police arrested an activist of Alo-Ansar group from the spot. Of the injured, Nurul Islam Ansar, Makhan Pramanik, Ariful islam, Askar Mollah, Ratan Hossain, Amirul islam, Akkas Ali, Moyeed Hossain were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital and different clinics in the town while the rest given first aid.
