Free medical camp held
Speakers at a discussion on Tuesday said the present government is taking necessary steps to ensure healthcare facilities in rural areas. They urged the doctors to work with sincerity to provide required service for the poor people side by side the government initiatives. They were addressing the inaugural ceremony of a daylong free medical camp at Hathazari College playground on Tuesday. Bangabandhu Memorial Trust organised the camp in association with Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Chittagong unit. General Secretary of Awami League North district unit MA Salam was the chief guest at the ceremony with BMA Chittagong unit President Dr Sheikh Shafiul Azam in the chair. Hathazari Upazila Chairman Md Ismail inaugurated the camp. Forty specialist doctors conducted the camp where around 3000 patients were provided with treatment free of cost, said the organisers. AL North District unit Vice-president Md Moinuddin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Farid Ahmad, Upazila Health Officer Sheikh Shahabuddin and Hathazari Degree College Principal Mir Kafil Uddin were the special guests. Speakers at a reception urged the students to follow the guidelines of a good teacher to succeed in life. The farewell reception was accorded to eight outgoing teachers of St Placid's High School on Thursday. President of School Management Board Bishop Laurence Subrata Houladar was the chief guest at the ceremony with Principal Brother Pradip Placid Gomez in the chair. Board member Melbin Rosario was the special guest. The outgoing teachers Lezly D Costa, Robiul Hossain, Shikha Chowdhury, Vivian Bhuiyan, F Sayeed, Babul Kanti Aich, Bani Bhattacharjee and Benedict Dayes also spoke at the function and talked about their experiences during their long teaching career in the school. Jatiya Party (JP) leader and Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Welfare Ministry Mahzabin Morshed urged the party activists to work hard to strengthen the organisation in Chittagong. She was speaking at a view exchange meeting with the leaders and activists of Bakalia ward on Thursday. JP Member Secretary Yakub Hossain, Joint Convener Osman Gani, Kamruzzaman Paltu and Nazim Uddin Bachchu spoke at the meeting with party convener Anisul Islam Mahmud in the chair. Speakers in the port city on Friday emphasised taking steps by both India and Bangladesh to make easy treatment facilities for the poor patients and to take measures to give access to hundreds of Bangladeshi patients who travel to India each year. Expressing concern over problems faced by the Bangladeshi patients in getting Indian visa, they also emphasised the need for discussion at government level in this regard to help the patients. They were speaking a press conference organised by the Apollo Greeneagles Hospitals Kolkata Chittagong office at a local restaurant. Apollo Greeneagles Hospitals doctors Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr Rabin Chakrabarti and Consultant Medical Onchologist Dr Arundhati Charabarti and Chittagong official Amarendru Sarker spoke at the press conference. They said around 30 to 35 percent of Bangladeshi patients go to different hospitals in India especially to eastern India due to geographical proximity, culture, food habits and language but many of them face problem in getting visa. They said the hospital authorities would meet the chief minister of West Bengal to discuss the issue. They said the 425-bed hospital in Kolkata provides every kind of diagnostic, therapeutic, palliative and preventive care. They said the hospital with new initiatives would provide better services for the people from Bangladesh. A new comprehensive cancer unit is all set to start its journey soon, they said, adding that beside the existing facility of bloodless curative cancer surgeries and effective chemotherapies, the new unit would offer Novalis Tx, the latest technology in radiation therapy. VoIP equipment recovered
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment worth around Tk 3 lakh from an apartment at Lalkhan Bazar in the port city on Tuesday. On information, a team of Rab-7 in cooperation with the officials of Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) raided a room on rooftop of the five-storey Al Amin Tower at High Level road around 2.00pm. They recovered the VoIP equipment including two channel boxes, two converters, two telephone sets, 17 cable plugs and a UPS worth around Tk 3 lakh in an abandoned condition. However, none could be arrested in this connection.
