Punishment to eve teasers demandedA human chain was formed in the port city on Wednesday with a call for protecting children and women from oppression and building an environment suitable for them. Alert And Advance (3 A), a non-government social organisation, organised the programme in association with Green Bangladesh and Mishu Foundation. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Ward Councillor Monwara Begum Moni inaugurated the event where Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Additional DC Md Ehsan Elahi, Additional District Magistrate ABM Azad, CCC councillors Advocate Abu Naser, Syed Golam Haider Mintu, Rekha Alam and Hasan Mahmud Chowdhury Hasni expressed solidarity with the programme. Speakers at a rally during the human chain programme demanded exemplary punishment to those involved in eve teasing and unleashing sexual and physical oppression on children and women. Speakers at a seminar in the port city on Tuesday emphasised protecting water bodies to help maintain required level of rainfall and temperature and face climate change. Bangladesh Research Initiatives of Environment Society (BRIES) and Dynamic Education for Social Advancement (Dyesa) Foundation jointly organised the seminar titled “Protecting water bodies to face climate change: Necessity and reality” at social science faculty of Chittagong University. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Yusuf was the chief guest at the seminar. Department of Environment (DoE), Chittagong division Director Md Mostafizur Rahman Akhanda attended as the special guest. BRIES Secretary M Abdur Rahman Rana, also an environment researcher, presented the keynote paper at the seminar with its President Prof Dr Gazi Saleh Uddin in the chair. Law Faculty Dean Md Zakir Hossain and Prof Md Shafiqul Islam of Institute of Marine Science and Fisheries, Chittagong University were the panel discussants. Chittagong Press Club (CPC) President Abu Sufian urged the students to build up themselves as future leaders of the country. He said there is no short cut way of enough study for achieving knowledge. He was addressing as the chief guest a reception ceremony accorded to the SSC examinees of Satkania Dhemsha High School. School Management Board member Hasan Mahmud and teacher Hossain Faruquee spoke at the ceremony with Board Vice President Ahmad Kabir in the chair. Speakers urged the students to start their study from the very beginning of the academic year for better result. Students Mizba Akhter, Nasrin Akhter, Purnima Das, Nibedita Das, Sanghati Sen, Pabliha Tahiad and Susmita Majumder and Kakoli Das also spoke at the function. Chittagong University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Yusuf emphasised improving the quality of higher education to help the students compete international arena. He urged the teachers of the university to try their best in providing quality education. He was addressing as the chief guest the inaugural ceremony of a workshop under Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project of University Grant Commission (UGC) on Saturday. Arts Faculty Dean Prof Kazi Mostain Billah chaired the workshop organised by the faculty at its gallery No 2. Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Alauddin was the special guest at the workshop. Prof Mohammad Shah presented the keynote paper. Prof Yusuf said students of different universities in the country are lagging behind in the study and research in comparison to the students of different foreign universities. He underscored the need for ensuring the facilities and benefits for the university teachers to improve the quality of higher education. They were addressing a workshop organised by Karmojibi Nari, a non-government organisation, at Chittagong Press Club (CPC) on Thursday. Enayet Bazar Women's College Principal Nilufar Jahur was the chief guest at the workshop moderated by Karmojibi Nari Secretary Sharmin Kabir. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) female councillor Rekha Alam Chowdhury, District Fisheries Officer Probhati Deb and Comilla unit President Dilnasin Mohsin also spoke. A number of demands, including one third female representatives at parliament, local government, cabinet, political and social organisations, administration and trade unions.
