Seminar on "Digital Bangladesh"
Speakers at seminar in the port city on Sunday emphasised the need for introducing technology-based management in all sectors starting from government to social levels to materialise the dream of “Digital Bangladesh.” They said general people's affordability of reaching information and communication technologies can help ensure the optimum uses of the technology. Press Information Department, Chittagong region organised the seminar titled “Digital Bangladesh: Pledge to build a prosperous Bangladesh” at Chittagong Zila Parishad auditorium. State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Dipankar Talukder was the chief guest at the seminar with Principal Information Officer of Press Information Department (PID) AKM Shamim Chowdhury in the chair. Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) General Secretary Nazimuddin Shyamal presented the keynote paper while Chittagong University (CU) Communication and Journalism Department Chairman Mir Mosharraf Hossain, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) teacher Shamsul Arefin and former general secretary of Chittagong Press Club Ezaz Yoosufi were the panel discussants. Speakers at a seminar on Sunday emphasised rapid afforestation and proper utilisation of forest resources to face adverse impact of global climate change. They also stressed the need for conducting intensive forest research activities and taking necessary measures accordingly in a coordinated way. Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI), Chittagong organised the seminar titled "Climate change adaptation and mitigation research in forestry sector in Bangladesh" at its auditorium. Chittagong University Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences Director Prof Dr M Al-Amin presented the keynote paper at the seminar with BFRI Principal Research Officer (forest resources) AKM Wajih Ullah. Prof Al-Amin said selection of species, preservation of seeds, adaptation of tree species and forest ecosystems to climate change as well as overall forest management strategy, action plan and priority activities to combat climate change impacts in Bangladesh. Restoration of the beauty of Parir Pahar (Fairy Hill) is very much possible if there is a plan and coordinated efforts. Speakers said at a multimedia projection on Parir Pahar organised by Forum for Planned Chittagong (FPC), a voluntary organisation of professionals, on Saturday. FPC member Architect Zarina Hossain presided over the function. Architect Naimul Ahsan Khan presented the multimedia projection titled "Preserving Parir Pahar area and considering Urban Development Opportunities." The projection depicted different stages of developing structures on the panoramic hill since 1880 and provided outlines for planned preservation of the hill keeping the existing structures intact. Private FM radio station Radio Today started its broadcasting in the port city since Thursday. Managing Director of Radio Today Rafiqul Hoque at a view exchange meeting on the occasion said they would try to give more focus on different issues of Chittagong considering its rich history, heritage and culture and bright business prospect. He hoped that they would be able to broadcast programme across the country by the year 2010. Chittagong University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Abu Yusuf, PHP Group Chairman Sufi Mizanur Rahman, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) Director Shafiul Alam, BJMEA First Vice President Nasiruddin Chowdhury, former Director Abdul Mannan Rana, woman rights activist Jesmin Sultana Paru, Chittagong Union of Journalist (CUJ) President Mostak Ahmad, General Secretary Nazimuddin Shyamal addressed the meeting at a local hotel. An academia-corporate dialogue was held at East Delta University in the port on Saturday. The curriculum directors and teachers of the university participated in the dialogue with high officials from different corporate business firms on the university campus. The dialogue aimed at modernising and bringing in required reforms in academic activities and curriculum in line with changing business technique and rules in the present age of globalisation. EDU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Sikander Khan presided over the dialogue where Premier University former Vice-Chancellor Anwarul Azim Arif and Prof Dr Tahlil Azim were the chief guest and special guest respectively. The speakers emphasised students' acquiring skills in different languages and proper utilisation of information technology, preparing and developing capacity to work in changing environment. Prof Dr Abul Hasan, Prof Nurul Abser and EDU Registrar Sajal Kanti Barua also spoke at the dialogue where some 50 executive officers from different corporate business firm took part.
