Inadvertent misattribution of a quotation

In my article in the TDS (“Humiliation of a headmaster: A symptom of the disease” published on June 2), there was an inadvertent misattribution of a quotation.  I had mistakenly suggested that the quote “Because it is there” (as a response as to why someone would take the enormous risks and challenges to climb Mount Everest), came from Sir Edmund Hillary. It actually came from George Mallory, a brilliant Cambridge educated bon vivant, who was associated with the Bloomsbury group, and was considered one of the most accomplished and adventurous climbers of his time.  In 1924, at the age of 37 or 38, during his third attempt to climb the Everest, he and his climbing companion disappeared. The remains of his body were recovered in May, 1999, in the north face of the Everest very close to the summit.

I apologise for my error, and am grateful to Prof. Safiul Huda for bringing it to my attention.
