A two-day film screening marking Shaheed Dibosh and International Mother Language Day will begin today (February 20) at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka, featuring politically significant Bangladeshi cinema alongside contemporary documentaries.

Organised by the Dhaka Film Club under the theme “Inspired by the spirit of Ekushey, let the new generation awaken,” the programme will run until February 21 at the road-island premises of the Teacher-Student Centre, University of Dhaka. Screenings are scheduled daily at 7:00 pm and are open to the public.

The opening evening will feature “Jibon Theke Neya”, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Zahir Raihan. Released in 1970, the film is widely regarded as a landmark political allegory in Bangladeshi cinema. Though produced before independence, its critique of authoritarian rule and symbolic engagement with collective resistance have long linked it to commemorations surrounding the Language Movement.

A contemporary documentary will also be screened on the opening day.

On February 21, organisers will present “Kalmilata”, directed by Shahidul Haque Khan, alongside another contemporary documentary.

Barua Manojit Dhimon, general secretary of Dhaka Film Club, said the initiative aims to honour the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bangla language while introducing significant Bangladeshi films to newer audiences.
