'The One About Matthew Perry' to premiere on Netflix

Netflix has announced “The One About Matthew Perry”, a three-part documentary series exploring the life, career and legacy of the late “Friends” star. The series will premiere globally on October 27.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson, the documentary will look beyond Perry's best-known role as Chandler Bing and explore his rise to fame, personal struggles and the experiences that shaped his life.

Perry played Chandler throughout all 10 seasons of “Friends”, which ran from 1994 to 2004 across 236 episodes. The role established him as one of television's most recognisable actors.

The documentary will feature never-before-heard testimony from Perry's sister Mia Perry Bowick and his lifelong friends, alongside previously unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family's private archive. Memories from his creative collaborators and other people close to him will also feature in the series.

The series will explore Perry's long struggle with addiction, an issue he spoke openly about throughout his later years. He detailed his experiences with addiction and recovery in his 2022 memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”.

According to Netflix, the documentary aims to present Perry as a person beyond his public image and his portrayal of Chandler Bing.

Robertson said Perry's career made audiences laugh and feel connected, while his openness about addiction became another significant part of his legacy.

Perry's sister Mia Perry Bowick is among the central voices in the documentary. She has described the process of sharing memories of her brother as one that took time, saying she wanted audiences to see him as a whole person rather than solely as Chandler or someone who struggled with addiction.

“The One About Matthew Perry” is produced by Maxine Productions, a Sony Pictures Television company. Robertson also serves as an executive producer, alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman. Lora Moftah is the co-executive producer, with Jessica Call serving as producer.
