Clooney hits back at White House after Trump ally mocks his acting
George Clooney has responded sharply to criticism from the White House following remarks he made accusing Donald Trump of potentially committing war crimes in relation to threats against Iran.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney criticised the tone of the administration’s response, arguing that global crises demand serious discourse rather than personal attacks.
“Families are losing their loved ones. Children have been incinerated. The world’s economy is on a knife’s edge,” Clooney said. “This is a time for vigorous debate at the highest levels, not for infantile name-calling.”
The exchange escalated after Trump posted on social media warning that a “whole civilisation” could be destroyed if Iran did not agree to ceasefire terms. Clooney later described such rhetoric as crossing a moral line, stating that talk of destroying a nation could amount to a war crime under international definitions.
The White House responded through communications director Steven Cheung, who dismissed Clooney’s comments and mocked his acting career in a post on X, prompting the actor’s rebuttal.
Clooney, who has long been critical of Trump, also addressed the personal nature of the attack, suggesting that disagreements over politics should not devolve into insults. He added that while differing viewpoints are valid, there must be a “line of decency”.
The remarks mark the latest in a series of public exchanges between Clooney and figures associated with the Trump administration, reflecting broader tensions between political leadership and prominent voices in the entertainment industry.
