Bangladeshi short film ‘NURI’ secures spot at Cannes
Bangladeshi short film “NURI”, written and directed by Mithun Jaman, has been officially registered in the Short Film Corner | Rendez-vous Industry at the 79th Festival de Cannes, held from May 17 to 20 in Cannes, France.
Producer Hasib Zuberi Shihan and writer-director Mithun Jaman are currently in Cannes to participate in the Short Film Corner.
“The SFC | Rendez-vous Industry is a professional platform that connects short filmmakers with global industry professionals, including distributors, festival programmers, and sales agents. Our film ‘NURI’ will be available for industry viewing in the Short Film Corner during the festival. It’s a wonderful opportunity for young filmmakers around the world to connect with the global market. We are very pleased to be part of this,” said producer Hasib Zuberi Shihan.
“NURI” is a 16-minute Bangla-language short film set on the shores of Cox’s Bazar, the world’s longest sea beach. It tells the story of an 11-year-old girl who finds resilience and hope through an unlikely bond with a newborn foal. The role of Nuri is played by a non-actor child from Cox’s Bazar.
“By focusing on a young girl’s inner world, the film shows how external forces beyond our control shape our most personal lives — specifically through emotion and lived experience. In a time of so much instability and separation, ‘NURI’ reminds us that resilience lives in the smallest gestures, and hope can survive in the most fragile bonds,” said Mithun Jaman.
“NURI” is produced by Hasib Zuberi Shihan and Bashar Georgis, and co-produced by Himesh Kar. The film’s cinematography is by Mohammad Arifuzzaman, while sound design is by Sayba Talukdar and Jawad Parvez. Music has been composed by Amzad Hossian, editing handled by Sameer Ahmed and Shihan Zuberi, and colour grading completed by Moonshine Post Production in Atlanta, USA.
The film is produced by Team Platform Ltd, a Dhaka-based creative production house specialising in live-action and animation. The company previously produced the award-winning animated short “Song of Whales”, which received the South Asia Best Short Award at AniMela and the Gold Award at DigiCon6 ASIA Bangladesh.
