Today two theatre troupes are set to perform street plays at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), advocating for the safety of theatre artistes. This protest is in response to the cancellation of the play “Nityapurana” on November 2, as well as the subsequent attack on renowned thespian Mamunur Rashid during a demonstration led by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) activists.

The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the Indian High Commission organised a musical evening dedicated to Shyama Sangeet by Kazi Nazrul Islam. The event took place yesterday afternoon.

Farooki, a renowned filmmaker, acknowledged the longstanding neglect of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. "Let’s not hide the fact—everyone knows the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has long been neglected. The budget for this sector is always limited. But my advantage is that I have an incredible team. Mohammad Azam is at the Bangla Academy, and he’s a brand! I have been following his work for a long time.”

Today, Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) activists organised and participated in a press conference held at the National Theatre Hall seminar room, in response to the unwarranted attack on activists during a protest at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s (BSA) National Theatre Hall yesterday. The meeting highlighted the urgent need for the protection of the nation’s cultural sector so that theatre activities can resume without fear.

Following the attack, the theater group Aranyak Natyadal decided to cancel the scheduled 7:00pm performance of their play Company at the main auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The artiste further shared that they have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow at 11:00am in BSA’s seminar hall to address the incident and the broader issues affecting theatre workers and the BSA nationwide. Senior theatre personalities are expected to attend.

While the play had started on time, the demonstrators resumed their protest outside the gates shortly afterwards. To prevent any escalation, Syed, in consultation with Desh Natok, the theatre troupe helming the play, decided to call off the show. He explained this decision in a virtual press conference on Monday morning.

Featuring more than 50 events, the festival will showcase architectural designs, artworks, photography, installation pieces, and performing arts, hosted in multiple venues around Korail as well as at Shala Neighbourhood Art Space, Gallery 101, and Alliance Française de Dhaka.

Though the play began on schedule, the demonstration resumed at the gates. Fearing escalation, Ahmed, in consultation with the theatre troupe Desh Natok, made the decision to stop the show. He explained the situation during a virtual press conference Monday morning.

Bangla Movement Theatre is set to present “Yoddha,” a historical and imaginative tragedy that delves into the history of Mainamati. 

Ahmed initially managed to calm the protestors, allowing the performance to start, but their discontent flared up again as they regrouped at the entrance to the theatre hall. When some attempted to breach the gate, Ahmed and Desh Natok members decided to call off the performance.

Under the theme "In fear, we falter; in defiance, we are Bangladesh," the festival aims to revitalise cultural expression in the post-July Revolution spirit.

Set to premiere on 25 November at Kolkata’s Gyan Mancha, the play signifies the end of an era for the beloved artiste.

In a statement issued by Assistant Secretary Lakshmi Rani Ghosh on October 29, it was announced that the government has reconstituted the eight-member board of trustees under the authority of Section 6 of the Kabi Nazrul Institute Act, 2018, as amended on June 13, 2022.

In the spirit of post-July Revolution rejuvenation, Shilpakala Academy seeks to reinvigorate cultural expressions across all social layers. With the theme “In fear, we falter; in defiance, we are Bangladesh,” the festival will run from November 1 to November 7 at Mukto Moncho in Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
