‘Sur Sammilon’ turns classical music into a theatrical experience
Hansdhwani’s special production “Sur Sammilon”, a theatrical presentation centred on classical music, was staged at Chhayanaut Auditorium on October 6.
Conceptualised and directed by Saiful Taankar, Founder Director of Hansdhwani, with theatre direction by Ratan Majumdar, the production brings together drama and different traditions of classical music. Set against a fictional incident from the late medieval period, the play explores classical music through a theatrical narrative.
Sangeet Guru Pandit Asit Dey attended the programme as chief guest, while Professor Nadia Soma Samad, Principal of Government Music College, was present as special guest. Ripon Kumar Biswas, Adviser of Hansdhwani, chaired the programme.
The evening began with the lighting of a lamp and the tuning of a tanpura by Pandit Asit Dey. The guests were later presented with uttariyas and commemorative crests.
“Sur Sammilon” featured a range of musical traditions and forms, including dhrupad, khayal, Carnatic classical music, Chinese classical music, Persian classical music, thumri, Western classical opera, tarana and bhajan.
The performances included a group dhrupad presentation by Arani Chowdhury, Sanjukta, Sonal Sinha, Pratima Rani Nattya, Om Avra Chowdhury, Imran Sarkar, Avijeet Barman, Amit Karmaker, Emon Khan and Kabita Moni.
Arya Shrestha Ghosh and Rathin Tikader presented solo khayal performances, while Tulshi Rani Devi performed Carnatic classical music. Sudip Dutta Ahon presented khayal and tarana, while Oikyjeet and Aruna performed a Chinese classical music duet.
Farzana Meghla, Kabita Moni and Rodoshi presented Persian classical music, while Pranami Podder performed thumri. Jemima Tahsin Ratri presented Western classical opera, and Prionti Podder performed a bhajan.
The production featured Arko Sarker, Bitto Som, Humayan Ahmed Rahat, Charli, Rathin Tikader, Anirban Halder, Sifat Pradhan, Takbir Khan and Ankita Majumder in various roles.
Goutam Sarker and Prashanta Kumar Das accompanied the performances on tabla, with Jahid on saz and Nupur on violin. Farhad Hossain handled the background music.
Laboni Saha, Assistant Professor, Bangla Department, Govt. Music College, hosted the programme.
