‘A rare human being’: Ujjal tributes Alamgir on 76th birthday
One of the most successful leading men in the history of Bangladeshi cinema, Alamgir remains a towering figure whose performances continue to resonate with audiences. A record number of National Film Awards, countless hits, and an illustrious career spanning acting, directing, and producing—his contributions are both vast and enduring. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Ekushey Padak.
Today, on April 3, the celebrated actor turns 76, marking over five decades in the industry, a journey that has firmly placed him among the golden generation of Dhallywood icons.
On this special occasion, fellow actor and close friend Ujjal, who has shared a bond with Alamgir for more than 50 years, spoke to The Daily Star, offering a heartfelt tribute.
“Alamgir is not just a leading man—he has excelled as a director and producer as well. In every field, he has proven his brilliance. His acting ability is extraordinary, and his numerous National Film Awards remind us of the magnitude of his talent,” said Ujjal.
Reflecting on Alamgir’s extensive body of work, he added, “Almost ninety percent of the renowned filmmakers in this country—past and present—have worked with him. That alone speaks volumes about his strength as an actor and his enduring appeal among audiences.”
Beyond the screen, Ujjal emphasised Alamgir’s deeply humane nature. “There is a side of him that most people don’t see. For nearly five decades, I’ve witnessed how quietly he looks after people—artistes, technicians, directors, producers. He keeps in touch, checks on their families, stands by them in times of need—yet never makes it visible. This quiet compassion is one of his rarest qualities.”
According to Ujjal, Alamgir is a man of conviction. “Whatever he believes in, he works towards it silently. In both personal and professional life, we all face struggles and ups and downs, but he has always remained grounded in his ideals.”
He went on to highlight Alamgir’s integrity. “I have never seen him do anything that could harm another person. While many of us may, knowingly or unknowingly, hurt others at times, Alamgir has always chosen to stand beside people instead.”
Paying tribute to his legacy, Ujjal said, “He is among those who helped shape the film industry of this country. He has acted in hundreds of films, earned immense popularity, and won the hearts of millions.”
Sharing a piece of cinematic history, he added, “Our country’s first film, ‘Mukh O Mukhosh’, had Alamgir’s father as one of its producers.”
Speaking about their long-standing friendship, Ujjal reflected, “Even after five decades, our relationship remains unchanged. We still meet regularly, spend time together, and have long conversations. Often, we talk about the film industry, its past, the people we’ve lost, and how it can evolve in the future.”
“Our bond extends beyond the screen—it’s familial. We speak on the phone every day. Back when we were leading men, we competed, but we were never rivals.”
Ending on a warm note, Ujjal said, “Today is Alamgir’s birthday. I send him my heartfelt prayers and love. May he be blessed with a long and healthy life.”
