‘Michael’ sets opening weekend record, beats ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
“Michael”, the biographical film on Michael Jackson, has posted the biggest opening weekend for a biopic, defying negative critical reception.
The film, released globally on April 23, earned $97 million in North America and $120 million overseas, taking its worldwide opening to $217 million, according to Variety.

This surpasses the previous benchmark set by “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018), the Queen biopic, which opened to $122 million globally and went on to gross $910 million.
“Michael” has also outpaced the opening of “Oppenheimer”, directed by Christopher Nolan, which debuted with over $174 million worldwide.

Starring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the film is currently the second-biggest global opener of the year, behind “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”.
In India, the film has reported a steady run, collecting approximately ₹16 crore. Industry figures have publicly backed the release, including Farah Khan, who praised the lead performance, and Anupam Kher, who described an emotional viewing experience.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film also features Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo.
The narrative traces Jackson’s rise from Gary, Indiana, to global stardom, covering his early years with the Jackson 5, the breakthrough of “Off the Wall”, and the success of “Thriller”.
Despite its commercial success, the film has drawn criticism from reviewers, with some accusing it of presenting a softened portrayal of the singer’s life. Audience turnout, however, has remained strong, driving its record-breaking debut.
