A commemorative volume in honour of Sanjida Khatun, one of the leading figures of Bangladesh’s cultural movement, has been published. The volume brings together writings, images and reflections on her life and work.

Titled “Ki Ragini Bajale”, the book was formally unveiled on Thursday evening at the Chhayanaut Cultural Centre in Dhanmondi. The event featured musical performances, readings and discussions that revisited her enduring cultural influence.

Literary scholar and critic Bhishmadeb Choudhury, speaking at the program, outlined the concept and structure of the volume. He noted that the publication had initially been planned to coincide with her 93rd birth anniversary but was delayed. “This is not merely a book; it is an album-like compilation,” he said, adding that it brings together 49 essays, one interview and a large collection of photographs documenting her life, philosophy and impact.

The editorial board includes Ramendu Majumdar, Mofidul Hoque, Begum Akhtar Kamal, Bhishmadeb Choudhury, Ruchira Tabassum Naved and Joyonto Roy. The book is published by Chhayanaut, with its general secretary Laisa Ahmed Lisa overseeing publication. The cover and design were done by artist Sabyasachi Hazra.

Organisers said the volume incorporates Khatun’s signature and a border from a sari she used, lending the book what they described as an added emotional dimension.

The writings are arranged thematically under sections such as life and works, pedagogy, reminiscences, critical essays and interview. Contributions from publications in Kolkata have also been included to broaden the perspective on her cross-border cultural influence.

Chhayanaut president Dr Sarwar Ali thanked all contributors and organisers involved in the publication.
Sanjida Khatun, a founding member of Chhayanaut and a key figure in Bangladesh’s cultural resistance and intellectual life, died in Dhaka on March 25, 2025.
