Deshantor explores migration through stellar music, theatre and film

Anandadhara Arts presented its acclaimed production, “Deshantor – Across the Border,” at the Redbridge Methodist Church Auditorium in London on Saturday (July 18), offering audiences an inspiring and emotionally powerful exploration of migration, identity and humanity.

Conceived and presented by renowned writer Professor Shahaduz Zaman, with musical direction by Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, Director of Anandadhara Arts, the programme examined the history of human migration across civilisations and reflected on how migration has shaped human evolution and the lives of immigrants throughout history.

The evening opened with a cultural programme featuring poetry, music and dance. Poems by Shankha Ghosh, Jibanananda Das and Syed Shamsul Haque were presented through both recitation and song, earning warm appreciation from the audience. Most of the musical pieces were composed by Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, with one composition by Shaheen Sarder.

Poetry recitations by Samar Saha, Tanisha Chowdhury and Ziarur Rahman Saklayen captivated the audience, while vocal performances by Ishita Saha and Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, along with a dance performance by Maati Siddiquee, were among the highlights of the evening. Their performances, together with the programme’s narration, vividly portrayed the emotions, struggles and aspirations of immigrant communities.

The cultural segment was followed by a screening of excerpts from the documentary “Who Am I,” directed by Mukul Ahmed, which further explored themes of identity and belonging.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments was a solo theatrical performance by acclaimed dramatist Hira Chowdhury from Connecticut, USA. Based on Professor Shahaduz Zaman’s short story “Uddin,” the performance deeply moved the audience with its poignant portrayal of the immigrant experience and received enthusiastic applause.

Addressing the audience, Professor Shahaduz Zaman said, “We all have a unique life and mindset as immigrants, and through this programme we wanted to portray those shared experiences.”

Introducing the event, Dr Imtiaz Ahmed said, “Migration is a global phenomenon that has continued throughout human history. We need to respect one another and support each other with dignity, compassion and humanity.”

The performances were supported by musicians Amit Dey and Piyash Borua, while the stage design by Gulam Akber Mukta and sound production by Arafat Kirti contributed to the programme’s professional presentation. AR Television, led by its Director Joydip Roy, served as the event’s media partner.

Combining literature, music, theatre and film, “Deshantor – Across the Border” offered a compelling reflection on one of humanity’s oldest and most universal experiences. The programme received an enthusiastic response from the audience and is expected to remain a memorable cultural event for those who attended.
