Woman killed, 3 injured in road accident in Panchagarh

A woman was killed on the spot after being run over by a stone-laden truck in Panchagarh today, while three others were critically injured when the truck driver tried to drive away from the spot.

The victim, Karima Khatun (35), wife of Ramjan Ali, is from Shingpara village under Panchagarh Sadar upazila, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent quoting Abu Akkas Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Police Station.

Quoting locals, OC Akkas said the accident occurred around 3:00pm when a Panchagarh-bound stone-laden truck ran over Karima as she was crossing the road with her goat after having it treated at the Panchagarh district livestock office.

Karima and the goat died on the spot, the OC said.

In a bid to escape, the driver of the truck hit an easy-bike and dragged it about 50 yards, injuring three people critically, the police official said.

The injured are easy-bike driver Moinul Islam (30), its passengers Fahima (35), and Shahana Begum (32), the OC informed.   

Fahima and Shahana were taken to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated while Moinul is undergoing treatment at Panchagarh Sadar Hospital.

Although the truck driver managed to flee, locals caught his assistant Anwar Hossain (30) and handed him over to police along with the truck.

A case was filed with the police station in this connection, the OC said.
