Rohingya woman among 2 arrested during attempt to get Bangladeshi passport
Two people including a Rohingya woman were arrested from Narayanganj during their attempt to obtain a Bangladeshi passport with fake identities and documents.
The arrestees are, Md Sumon (32), a passport broker from Barisal and Nur Taj (18), the suspected Rohingya female.
On information, a team of Rab yesterday arrested them from the regional passport office in Narayanganj along with fake national ID card, a fake birth certificate and passport application form, said Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, a company commander of Rab-11.
In primary interrogation, Nur Taj said she is an orphan and used to stay in the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and tried to get a passport through the broker, the Rab official told our Narayanganj Correspondent.
But in primary investigation and after going through the seized documents, Rab officials found she has been living in Dhaka's Mugda with her mother Sharmin, two brothers for the last four years. Her father Sadik is in Australia, Jasim Uddin, who is also an additional superintendent of police, said.
Rab is investigating whether her father went to Australia from Myanmar or Bangladesh.
The Rab official said the family was never in the Rohingya camp as their names were not found in any of the lists. They earlier managed a passport for Nur Taj's brother saying he is an inhabitant of Barishal.
Suman, an employee of a travel agency in Motijheel, used to help people in getting fake NID cards, birth certificates and subsequently passports in exchange of money, Rab said.
Rab filed a case against the duo with Fatullah Police Station in this regard.
