Attack on Prothom Alo journalist in Brahmanbaria: local Sainik League leader arrested

Police have arrested Zahirul Islam Jumman, convener of the Brahmanbaria Sainik League, six days after Prothom Alo's reporter Shahadat Hossain was attacked by his younger brother Roman Miah, when Shahadat was on professional duty in the district's railway station area.

Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Emranul Islam said, another accused in the case, Zahirul Islam Jumman, was arrested from his Kazipara residence today.

The victim who is also the plaintiff of the case, Shahadat Hossain told The Daily Star that the main accused Roman, who was arrested on the day of the incident, was presented in court today.

Senior Judicial Magistrate, Zaki-al-Farabi granted a two-day remand after police requested a five-day remand for questioning Roman, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports. Roman's lawyer applied for bail but was denied.

According to the case sources, the district Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) organized a human chain at the station premises on June 1, demanding reopening of the Brahmanbaria railway station, which was damaged during the Hefajat violence.

Shahadat, who was on professional duty there, came to know that a BCL activist had beaten up the gate keeper of the railway station. While informing the matter to Hasan Sarwar, BCL's former vice-president, BCL activist Roman got angry and attacked Shahadat in front of Hasan Sarwar. Later, Shahadat was rescued by other journalists present there and taken to the hospital.

Journalists, outraged by the news of the attack on Shahadat, immediately gathered at the Brahmanbaria Press Club and demanded Roman's arrest. Later that evening, Shahadat Hossain filed a case against Roman and his elder brother Jumman at the Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station.

On the same night, while fleeing to Dhaka, police arrested Roman from Birasa area of ​​the city and sent him to jail through the court.
