1st execution at Dinajpur jail

Dinajpur District Jail authorities, for the first time, executed a convict of a murder case. 

Abdul Haque (55) of Bhaktipur village under Mithapukur Upazila of Rangpur was executed at 12:01 am today, our Dinajpur correspondent reports quoting jail officials.

According to officials, a murder case was filed against Abdul Haque under Woman and Children Repression prevention Act with Mithapukur Police Station on February 9 in 2002, for killing his wife.

He had been in jail since he was arrested on August 28 that year.

On March 5, 2007, Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 in Rangpur sentenced him to death. The High Court and Supreme Court also upheld the verdict.

Later, the man appealed for the presidential mercy recently, which was turned down on May 18.

Deputy Commissioner Khaled Mohammad Zaki, Superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain, Jail Superintendent of Dinajpur Mokammel Hossain and Civil Surgeon Dr Abul Kuddus were present during the execution.

To execute the death sentence, an executioner was brought to Dinajpur from Rajshahi jail.
