Councillor candidate found dead in Jhenidah hours after rival candidate’s brother was killed

Police recovered the body of councillor candidate Alamgir Khan Babu, of ward-8 under Jhenidah's Shailakupa upazila, hours after brother of the rival candidate was hacked to death last night.

Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Shailakupa Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star this afternoon.

Alamgir's body was recovered around 1:45 am from Debtala Ghat area near Kumar river, the OC said.

He was in hiding since being accused of the murder of Boltu Hossain, younger brother of rival candidate Shawkat Hossain, yesterday, the OC also said.

Fazilatunnesa, wife of Alamgir Khan Babu, said she talked with him over phone around 10:30 pm last night. "He told me he was safe," she said.

"We will come to know about the cause of death after receiving the autopsy reports", OC Jahangir Alam said.
