Water of 5 rivers flowing above danger level in Gaibandha, Bogura
The flood situation in Gaibandha and Bogura districts is deteriorating as the water level of five rivers flow above the danger level triggering the inundation of cropland.
The river protection dyke has been submerged while roads have been damaged in Gaibandha resulting in the suspension of vehicular movement on Gobindaganj- Dinajpur regional highway from last evening.
In Gaibandha, water level of the Brahmaputra, Korotoa and Ghaghot crossed the danger level and are flowing 5cm, 26cm and 116cm respectively, above the danger level.
Ramkrishna Barman, the upazila nirbahi officer of Gobindaganj upazila said, "Due to the flood, the Gobindaganj–Dinajpur regional highway is left unusable, suspending vehicular movement since last evening.
Upazila's health complex has remained under water since the flooding began four days back.
According to Gaibandha Department of Agricultural Extension, a total of 13,050 hectares of cropland have been inundated including around 400 hectares of vegetable plants so far.
Masudur Rahman, deputy director of DAE predict that more cropland can be affected as the water level is increasing.
River embankments and roads in several places have also been damaged in Gobindaganj upazila. Dyke of The Karoatoa River in Boglagari and Balua area broke yesterday night and flooded at least 20 villages of the upazila.
UNO Ramkrishna said around 50 thousand people of the upazila are stranded in the floods since the last few days.
According to the flood-forecast, the water will recede next Saturday.
In Bogura, water level of Jamuna and Bangali River is flowing 32cm and 34.7cm respectively above the danger level.
According to DAE, 1445 hectares of cropland have been inundated including 1290 hectares of Aman paddy, 51 hectares of Black-gram, 67 hectares of vegetables and 30 hectares of bananas so far.
A government primary school in Bogura's Sariakandu upazila also collapsed into the Bangali River last night.
In Kurigram, the water of Brahmaputra River has been flowing above 4cm of its danger level at Chilmari Ghat point of Chilmari upazila in Kurigram since this morning.
If the water level continues to rise, the banks of Brahmaputra River might flood again in the next 24 hours, fears Mizanur Rahman, executive engineer of Kurigram WDB.
