Section 144 to quell BCL factions' tension

Fulchhari upazila administration yesterday enforced Section 144 on meetings and rallies in the upazila and surrounding areas.

Police said Fulchari upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) announced holding of a meeting and rally at the upazila parishad premises on National Mourning Day. Udakhali union unit of BCL also announced they would hold a similar programme at the same venue and time.

A tense situation was prevailing in the area over the issue.

Sensing a probable confrontation between the two rival groups, the upazila administration enforced Section 144 in the upazila and adjoining areas from 12 noon for an indefinite period and banned meeting or rally.

The administration deployed additional police to maintain law and order.

Abdul Awal, UNO of Fulchari, said Section 144 was imposed to avert any confrontation and to maintain law and order in the area.
