Robbers kill fisherman, injure 45 others in Bay

Armed robbers shot dead a fisherman and injured 45 others in Kutubdia Channel of the Bay of Bengal near Char Nizam in Monpura upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased is Sidu Majhi, 35, of ward No 3 under Daulatkhan municipality of the district.

Of the injured, 20 fishermen were given primary treatment at Daulatkhan Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Bhola Sadar Hospital.

Among them, 11 were identified as Dulal, Maksud, Shah Alam, Maksud (2), Miraz, Alamgir, Hadis, Nur Islam, Jasim, Mezbah and Mizan, while the identity of the rest could not be known.

The injured fishermen, who returned to the shore, said Sidu along with several other fishermen from Daulatkhan upazila went to catch fish in the sea on Thursday morning.

On Friday afternoon, over 50 robbers on two trawlers opened fire on 20/25 fishing trawlers, leaving Sidu dead on the spot and 45 others injured.

At least three trawlers sank in the sea after those  were hit by the trawlers carrying the robbers, said Moslem Uddin, boatman of 'FB Faria'

However, all the fishermen of the trawlers managed to swim ashore, Moslem added.

Contacted, Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge of Daulatkhan Police Station, said the incident occurred between Monpura and Hatia upazilas and they have already informed the police stations concerned.
