Rival groups' clash leaves 2 dead, 20 injured
Two people were killed and 20 injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Khatura village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Jalil Miah, 30, and Rokeya Begum, 23, of the village.
According to witnesses and police sources, an altercation broke out between supporters of Fazal Miah, 45, of Khatura village and Khalilur Rahman, 42, member of Jagadishpur Union Parishad and resident of the village in the afternoon.
As a sequel to that, the two groups, equipped with lethal weapons, locked in a clash that spread through the village and the adjacent areas.
Being informed, police from Madhabpur Police Station went to the spot and fired 13 rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the feuding groups.
Mullah Monir Hosain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Madhabpur Police Station, said the clash left two people dead and around 20 injured from both sides.
Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital while the rest were given first aid.
Riot police have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident, the OC said.
Earlier on Sunday, around 45 people were injured in a clash between two groups of people over land dispute in the same upazila.
