Rape, murder of schoolgirl sparks protest in Rangpur

Local people, relatives and fellow students formed a human chain in front of the deputy commissioner's office in the city yesterday, demanding punishment to the culprits who killed a schoolgirl after rape in Deodoba area on March 20.

Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers also threatened to go for a tougher agitation if the killers were not arrested in the next three days.

An unidentified gang entered the house of Abed Ali in the city's Deodoba area when he and his wife went to attend a Waj Mahfil (religious function) in the area, leaving their daughter Ayesha Siddiqua Sumaiya, 13, a class VII student of Jaheda Khatun Girls School and College, alone at their house on March 20.

They entered the house around 8:00pm, raped Sumaiya and later strangled her. 

After returning home around 11:00pm, family members found her lying on the floor and took her to the hospital where the doctors declared her dead, police said.

Victim's father Abed Ali filed a case against some unidentified people with Kotwali Police Station the following morning.

Contacted, Abdul Qader Jilani, officer-in-charge of the police station, said they are trying to arrest the culprits involved.
