Over 30,000 families displaced in Patuakhali
Over 30,000 families were displaced and lost their occupational opportunities due to land accusation for ongoing development projects in Patuakhali’s Kalapara, according to the fact-finding report of Life and Nature Safeguard Platform.
The report was presented at a dialogue arranged by LNSP at The Daily Star Centre this afternoon where many experts, green and rights bodies activists and affected people took part in the programme
The LNSP team visited different parts of three unions --Champapur, Dhankhali and Lalua – of the upazila on January 27-28 and the reporter was prepared based on outcome of the visit.
The report said around half of total land in the three unions has been acquired while 5 per cent of the upazila’s total lands has been acquired for 15 different projects including Payra sea port, a navy base, and three coal-based power plant projects in the area.
These development projects have posed a threat to hilsa sanctuary and fish breeding, local environment and ecosystem, the report said.
