One person, 36 cows go missing after boat capsizes in Jamuna

One person and 36 cows went missing after a boat carrying around 40 sacrificial animals capsized in Jamuna river near Aricha ghat in Manikganj today.

The boat, carrying 40 cows and some owners from different parts of Pabna district, was heading towards a cattle market in Manikganj area ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The boat capsized around 8:45am as it neared Aricha ghat due to heavy current in the river, our local correspondent reports quoting Mujibur Rahman, station officer of Aricha Fire Service Station.

The missing person is Razab Ali (65) of Kashinathpur village in Pabna who owned four cows on the boat, the fire service official said quoting people who managed to swim ashore.

Among the survivors, Rahman Ali Biswas (50) of Sathia upazila of the district said he lost six cows in the incident. He estimated the market price of his cows to be around Tk 6 lakh.

On information, a team of fire fighters went to the spot and rescued four cows but  could not find any more survivors due to the heavy current, Mujibur Rahman said.
