Nusrat Murder: Dept proceedings against SP underway

Two more police officers have been suspended and attached to other police units for their negligence in dealing the case filed over the murder of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan.

Apart from this, the police authorities are also taking action against SM Jahangir Alam, superintendent of police in Feni, sources in Police Headquarters (PHQ) said. The SP will be attached to another unit after withdrawing from the district as a punitive action, they said.

The two police officials -- Sub-Inspector Abu Yousuf and Sub-Inspector Iqbal Ahmed of Sonagazi Police Station – were suspended on Friday, said a top official of PHQ.

SI Yousuf has been attached to the office of deputy inspector general Khulna Range office and SI Iqbal has been attached to Khagrachhari Hill Tracts as per the recommendation of the committee formed by the PHQ to probe the murder, Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media and PR) at the PHQ, told to The Daily Star.

Regarding action against the police super, AIG Sohel said that they are also taking action against the SP as per the recommendation of the PHQ probe body. The SP will be removed from Feni to another unit and disciplinary action against him is underway at Ministry of Home Affairs, he added.

They are facing the actions on charges of violating departmental discipline, tarnishing the image of the police and behaving inappropriately, police said.

THE FINDINGS OF THE PROBE BODY

The committee formed by the PHQ to probe the murder found that the OC and three other policemen, including the police superintendent in Feni, performed their duties negligently.

The probe committee included Deputy Inspector General SM Ruhul Amin and Additional SP Mohammad Abu Suffiun of the PHQ.

The committee recommended suspension of OC Moazzem and Sub-inspector Iqbal and transfer of SP SM Jahangir Alam and Sub-inspector Abu Yousuf. It also suggested departmental proceedings against all of them.

DEMO OVER ATTACHMENT OF EX-OC

Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad today staged a demonstration in Lalbagh area of Rangpur protesting attachment of former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain with the district police lines.

From the demonstration, they called upon the authorities concerned to withdraw the police officer from the range office by 48 hours demanding immediate punishment of those involved in Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder.

OC Moazzem Hossain was suspended and attached to the office of deputy inspector general (Rangpur Range) on Wednesday for his negligence in dealing Nusrat murder case.
