No security threat during Buddha Purnima: IGP

There is no specific threat ahead of Buddha Purnima to be celebrated across the country on May 18, Inspector General of Police Mohammad Javed Patwary said today.

However, special security measures have been taken in the Buddhist temples for peaceful celebration, he said at a meeting on law and order at police headquarters in Dhaka.

Top police and Rab officials, representatives of the Buddhist community took part in the meeting.

In the meeting, the IGP instructed the police members to carry out block raids, set up checkpoints ahead of the religious festival.

He also instructed to increase surveillance so that none can spread rumour and misleading information on social media.

Javed Patwary also urged the Buddhist community to not carry any handbags or purses while visiting the temples on security ground. 

Earlier, different media outlets citing foreign intelligence reported that terrorists may carry out attacks during Buddha Purnima celebration.
