Missing baby found dead

The body of an eight-month-old baby girl was found floating in a pond near her house at Hostishando village in Uzirpur upazila of the district early Wednesday, hours into her missing.

The dead is Mariam Begum, daughter of Nazrul Islam, an employee at a private company in the capital and a resident of the village.

Quoting the deceased's mother Fatema Begum, 20, police said Fatema raised a hue and cry around 1:30am after she found her daughter Mariam, who was sleeping beside her, not in her bed and the door of her room wide open.  

On information, police went to the spot and began to look for the baby girl. At one stage, they spotted Mariam's floating body in a pond beside their house around 3:30am, said Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Uzirpur Police Station.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
