Man to die for killing wife

A Sirajganj court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Ullapara upazila of the district in 2008.

The death penalty awardee is Abdus Salam, 33, son of Shukur Ali of Dohokhola village in the upazila.

The court also acquitted eight other accused in the case as charges brought against them could not be proved, said Special Public Prosecutor Md Abdul Hamid Lablu.

According to the prosecution, Abdus Salam strangled his wife Fatema Khatun, 25, following an altercation over a family feud on November 27, 2008. Later, he set the body of his wife afire by pouring kerosene.

Gulzar Hossain, maternal uncle of Fatema, filed a murder case with Ullapara Police Station the same day, accusing Salam and nine others. Police pressed charges against them in 2011.

After examining the case record and witnesses, Judge Masudur Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the afternoon.

Our Moulvibazar correspondent adds: A housewife was raped allegedly by a man in Ghurakhali area under Baniarchang upazila of Habiganj district at around 7:00pm on Sunday.

Locals said Shah Alam, 30, son of Modhu Miah of Ikram village in the upazila, swooped on the housewife while she was returning home at the village from a haor in the area at around 7:00pm.

He forcibly took her to the haor, raped her and left the scene, they added.
