Life term for killing wife

A court here yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in 2011.

The lifer is Monirul Islam, 37, son of late Nazrul Islam of Chaitannaypur village in Shibganj upazila.

District and Sessions Judge Enamul Bari also fined him Tk 20,000. In default, he is to suffer another two years in jail.

According to the prosecution, Monirul strangled his wife Champa Begum, 30, daughter of Asgar Ali of Pashchim Chandipur village, for Tk 50,000 dowry on March 1 in 2011.

Following a murder case filed by the victim's mother Anarkoli Begum, police arrested Monirul.
