Judicial body formed to probe advocate’s death in Panchagarh jail

The High Court today formed a judicial committee led by the chief judicial magistrate of Panchagarh to inquire into the death Advocate Palash Ray in a fire inside the jail.

Another judicial magistrate will provide necessary assistance to the judicial committee which comprised of the chief judicial magistrate, deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and the jail super of Panchagarh, the High Court said in response to a writ petition.

The court asked the judicial committee to submit the probe report before it in 30 days, writ petitioner Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order following the writ petition filed seeking its order to form a judicial inquiry committee to conduct the incident of Advocate Palash Ray.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain in four weeks why their failure to give protection to Advocate Palash Ray at the jail should not be declared illegal.

Advocate Palash Ray, who was picked up in a criminal case on March 26, came in contact with the fire inside Panchagarh jail.

Injured Palash Ray was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died later.
