Human chain, rally demand capital punishment of killers

People of Ghoraghat upazila in the district formed a human chain at Thana Road in the upazila headquarters yesterday, demanding capital punishment of the killers of minor boy Parash.

Teachers and students of schools and colleges, local politicians and traders joined the hour-long programme from 11:00am, held a rally at the venue and then took out a procession in the upazila town.

Addressing the rally, the speakers demanded capital punishment of the killers. They also demanded removal of Md Nuruzzaman Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghoraghat Police Station, for his alleged failure to rescue the boy alive.

They alleged that the OC did not act quickly despite repeated requests from the victim's parents.

Contacted, OC Nuruzaman Chowdhury said the allegation against him is false.

SM Rabiul Islam, General Secretary of Ghoraghat upazila unit of Awami League (AL), Abdur Rahim, joint convener of Ghoraghat municipality unit of AL, and BCL leader Shams Hossain addressed the rally.

Parash Chandra Saha, 4, son of Keshab Chandra Saha of Kadimnagar village, was abducted on Wednesday afternoon from the area. The abductors later demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom.

Police recovered the body of the boy on Thursday morning. They said criminals strangled the boy and gouged out his left eye.

Police have so far arrested nine people, suspecting their involvement in the killing. Of them, five were taken on seven days' remand.

Meanwhile, Raju Ahmed, a sub-inspector of Ghoraghat Police Station, was replaced as investigation officer by Inspector Md Imtiaz Ahmed of the police station on Sunday.
