Ex-UP member held for raping woman in Rangamati
A former union parishad member was arrested by police this afternoon for allegedly raping a woman in Rangamati's Barkal upazila after promising to marry her.
A team of Rangamati's Kotwali Police Station arrested Alamgir Hossain, former member of the upazila's Bhushan Chhara union parishad, from a hotel in the district town around 4:30pm, said Sufi Ullah, additional superintendent of Rangamati police.
The victim, 35, lodged a written complaint against Alamgir after she was rescued by police and they were taken to the police station, Sufi Ullah said.
She later filed a case against Alamgir, said Sufi Ullah.
In the written complaint, the victim said Alamgir raped her many times over six months, promising to marry her and intimidating her in various ways.
Today, Alamgir called the woman to a hotel in Rangamati town and demanded Tk 1 lakh for business purposes, saying that he would circulate their secret photos and videos on the internet if she did not do so, the police officials said quoting the complaint.
Alamgir raped the woman again after she came to the hotel under threat of making the pictures and videos public, the victim said in the complaint.
When she managed to make a phone call to her family members, who in turn alerted the police, she was rescued from the hotel.
