Five held with arms, ammo in Patuakhali, Benapole

Law enforcers in separate drives arrested five people with arms and ammunition in Patuakhali district and Benapole of Jessore early yesterday and on Monday night, reports our correspondents.

In Patuakhali, police raided different areas of the town and arrested four people, including a leader of a robber gang and seized a foreign made pistol, a rifle, a magazine and three bullets from their possession.

The arrestees are, robber leader Alam Mir, 53, of Auliapur village, advocate Mazharul Islam alias Rinku, 33, of College Road area in the town, Shafique,  30, of Kalatala and Farid, 30, of Adalatpara areas in the town.

SM Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Police Station said, on secret information, police raided Keramat Bridge area in Sadar upazila around 2:00am and detained the four along with a rifle and three bullets.

Shafiq bought the pistol from Alam for Tk 50,000. He later sold the firearms to Rinku at Tk 22,000, the OC said.

On the basis of his confessional statement, police later arrested Farid and seized the pistol from his house.

Police said Alam is an accused in a number of cases filed with different police stations of the district.

In Benapole, police arrested Mostafizur Rahman, 30, of Ghiba village along with a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and a bullet from Boalia Bazar on Monday night.

Sub-inspector Firoz Uddin of Benapole Port Police Station said a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided the area around 10:30pm and arrested Mostafizur along the arms and ammunition.

A case was filed with the police station in this connection.

Meanwhile our Thakurgaon correspondent reported that a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested a local drug trader at Dogachi village in Baliadangi upazila of the district early yesterday.

The detainee is Kuleshwar, 30, son of Dol Mohon of the village. Police also seized 100 bottles of phensidyl from his possession.

Detectives, acting on tip-off, conducted a drive at the village and arrested Kuleshwar. On the basis of his statement, law enforcers seized the contraband Indian drug from a mango orchard at the village at around 3:00am.
