Five acid throwers get life

A court here yesterday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a housewife and her two daughters at Ramrari village in Durgapur upazila in 2007.

The convicts are Bachchu Miah, 30, Hanif Miah, 22, Rukku Miah, 25, Jamal Hossain, 60 and Buruj Ali, 25. They all are from Ramrari village in the upazila.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each.

According to the prosecution, the convicts threw acid on Sheuli Akhter and her two daughters on May 19, 2007 over previous enmity, leaving them critically injured.

Sheuli filed a case with Durgapur Police Station on May 25, accusing the five.

After examining the case record and eight witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hamid, also the Judge of Acid Crimes Control Tribunal-2, handed down the verdict.
