Elephant found dead at Lohagara forest

An elephant was found dead near a forest in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram this morning.

The male Asian Elephant -- aged around 25 according to experts -- was found lying at Borhatiya union in the upazila, our Chattogram staff correspondent reports.

"Primary inspection suggests it (the elephant) was electrocuted. We will take action against the perpetrator involved in the killing," said Abu Naser Mohammad Yeasin Neyaz, divisional forest officer (wildlife and nature conservation) of forest department.

He added that they rushed to the spot with a veterinary surgeon to determine the exact cause of death.

This month -- from November 9 on -- saw a total of four elephant deaths in Cox's Bazar-Chattogram belt, which is an important corridor of the giant mammal.
