Driver killed in van collision on Bangabandhu Bridge East Link Road
The driver of a pickup van was killed and his helper injured as it collided head-on with a covered van on Bangabandhu Bridge East Link Road in Tangail's Kalihati upazila this morning.
The collision took place around 7:30am. As a result, the covered-van was thrown onto the adjacent Joydebpur-Bangabandhu Bridge rail line blocking it, reports our local correspondent quoting Kazi Ayub Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.
The rail movement on the route remained halted for roughly an hour till police managed to move the covered van around 8:30am, the OC said.
Meanwhile, Dhaka-bound Sirajganj Express train leaving from Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station reached the spot and hit the covered-van on the railway, said Station Master Razaul Karim.
The oil tank of the train's engine was punctured due to it, the station master said adding that the train remained stuck there for around 40 minutes.
However, no passenger of the train was hurt in the incident.
Later, the train managed to go to nearby Gharinda Railway Station to get the tank repaired, afterwards leaving for Dhaka.
Police recovered the body of the pickup van's driver. His identity could not be known immediately.
