Ctg Dept of Environment fines 14 businesses, 1 individual Tk 11.81 lakh

Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram fined 14 businesses and one person a total of Tk 11.81 lakhs for not renewing clearance certificates, lifting sand, and violating DoE conditions.

The fine was imposed today after a hearing at the DoE office in Khulshi area of the port city.

Of the 14 businesses, seven were brick kilns -- five from Chandpur and the rest from Laxmipur, Feni and Cox's Bazar, Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram told The Daily Star.

They were fined Tk 9.5 lakh for not renewing their licenses and also for polluting air.

Apart from the seven brick kilns, three industries from Cumilla -- Gaint BD Co Limited, General High Tech and Al Amin Fish Feed -- were fined Tk 70,000.

Three more industries from Chattogram -- Mirsarai Poultry Farm, Conscious Pathology of Rangunia and K R Oxygen -- were fined Tk 35,000 for violating conditions specified in the clearance certificates.

An individual was fined Tk 1.16 lakh for illegally lifting sand in Bandarban's Lama upazila, Moazzom said.
