A gang severed the left hand and left leg of a madrasa teacher of Chalitabunia village in Amtali upazila under the district yesterday.
The victim, Shahidul Islam, 40, son of Abdul Khaleque Mia of Chalitabunia village, is senior assistant teacher of Gazipur Alim Madrasa in Amtali upazila.

Shahidul was crossing Chalitabunia road on his way to Amtali upazila town at about 10:00am when a five-member gang led by Eakub attacked him, police and locals said.

They hacked him with sharp weapons, severing his left hand and left leg.

Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and brought him to Amtali Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor referred him to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Shortly after the incident, police arrested five people -- Bahadur, 25, Kawsar, 30, Mahtab, 28, Eakub, 27, and Babul, 30, all of the same area, for their alleged involvement in it, police said.

A longstanding quarrel with neighbours might have led to the brutal incident, locals said.

"We have already arrested five people for their alleged involvement in the matter and a case has been filed with Amtali Police Station in this regard," said Sukumer Roy, officer in charge of the police station.
