Couple get life for drug peddling

A court here yesterday sentenced a couple to life imprisonment for drug peddling.

The lifers are, Nuruzzaman Mia, 52, and his wife Roksana Begum alias Disco Bhabi, 35, of Khamarpara area in the city.

According to the case statement, police arrested the couple along with 32 grams of heroin from their house on September 2 in 2013.

After investigation, the investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet against four people, including the couple, on October 31, the same year.

After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Monjurul Basit of the District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict in presence of Nuruzzaman while his wife Roksana was tried in absentia.

The court also acquitted two other accused--Zahir Raihan and Sadia Akhter Asha--as the charges brought against them could not be proved.
