Clash over land dispute leaves one dead, 40 hurt

A youth was killed and 40 others, including two cops, were injured in a clash between two groups of people over land dispute at Kawriakandi village in Baniarchang upazila of Habiganj district on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Syed Miah, 25, son of Nur Miah of the village.

Quoting locals, police said there had been a long-standing dispute between Taidul Islam, former member of Monomukh Union Parishad, and Ashkir Miah, president of the union unit of BNP. 

Taidul Islam had an altercation with his neighbor Ashkir Miah over the disputed land at around 6:30pm. At one stage, supporters of the two, equipped with sharp weapons, attacked each other, leaving Syed Miah dead on the spot and 40 others injured.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured were admitted to Baniarchang Upazila Health Complex. The seriously injured were later referred to Habiganj Sadar Hospital.

Contacted, Nirmalendu Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Baniarchang Police Station said police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy. 

Police on Tuesday arrested eight people of the village for their alleged involvement in the clash.
