Charge sheet filed in 2 cases over migrant boat capsize in Mediterranean Sea
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today pressed charges in connection with two cases filed over a boat capsize in the Mediterranean Sea, which killed 39 Bangladeshis trying to illegally migrate to Italy.
Shahidul Islam, inspector of CID's Economy Crime Squad, filed the charge sheet accusing six members of an international human trafficking syndicate.
One of the cases was filed for human trafficking and another for money laundering.
The six -- Enamul Haque Enam, Jayed Ahmed, Abdur Razzak Bhuiyan, Monzur Hossain Rubel, Yakub Ripon and mastermind of the syndicate Nasir Uddin Rumman alias "Good Luck" -- have been made accused in both the charge sheets, the inspector said.
He said, "The charge sheet in the human trafficking case has been submitted to Judge Muhidul Haque of Women and Children Oppression Prevention Court while the charge sheet in money laundering case was submitted to Sylhet District Session Judge Bazlur Rahman."
One Saiful Islam, who was named accused in the case, was acquitted from the chargesheet. Enamul and Razzak are now in jail while others are absconding.
A boat carrying around 80 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea on May 9 last year while making a voyage to Italy from Libya. On May 16, a case was filed with Bishwanath Police Station by Rezaul Islam Raju, one of the victim's brother.
